Liberia
Liberia has faced significant challenges, including two civil wars (1990-1996; 2003), two Ebola virus epidemics (2013-2014; 2016), economic setbacks due to global commodity price shocks, and the Coronavirus pandemic. Despite some progress in its healthcare systems, Liberia continues to grapple with a substantial burden of challenges. These include high maternal and neonatal mortality rates, the prevalence of non-communicable diseases, emerging health threats like Lassa fever, and the compounding influence of climate and environmental factors on the burden of disease. The nation faces significant hurdles in health workforce development and data harmonization within its health systems. There is a pressing need to strengthen the existing health system structure to address these challenges. Our focus is to identify knowledge gaps through research to enhance the resilience of Liberia's health systems. Our research and practice aim to pinpoint practical implementation strategies for building resilient health systems, drawing on empirical research findings in Liberia. Our efforts will demonstrate the importance of collaboration, preparedness, organizational capacity, and learning, ultimately contributing to the strengthening of the health system in Liberia.
